haiti - how to help

In Haiti, tens of thousands of people—or more—are reported dead and the death toll continues to rise after the most devastating earthquake to shake the region in two hundred years. Schools, hospitals, government buildings, and thousands of homes have been destroyed; over three million people have been left without adequate food, shelter, healthcare and basic infrastructure.

Do you want to help? Jewish organizations are in the forefront of early responders, and you may wish to give through one or more of them.

American Jewish World Service has been an early responder, thanks to its already existing support of grassroots organizations in Haiti. Through their partnership with Konbit Pou Ayiti, Lambi Fund of Haiti, and other grantees, they are providing emergency funding for food, shelter and medical supplies to people in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding rural areas. Donations can be made to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund at  www.ajws.org/haitiearthquake or send a check to American Jewish World Service, 45 West 36th Street, 11th floor, New York, NY 10018-7904.

The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) has opened its disaster relief fund to aid those devastated by the severe earthquake. The URJ works with a number of partner organizations, already on the ground or on their way to provide assistance. Donations to the Union for Reform Judaism Haiti Relief Fund can be made online at www.urj.org/relief or by sending a check to Union for Reform Judaism, Attention: Development, 633 Third Avenue, 7th floor, New York, NY, 10017.

The Community Relations Committee of Metrowest NJ responds to emergency and disaster situations around the world and works to galvanize support from the MetroWest community to demonstrate the Jewish values of tikkun olam (repair of the world) and g’milut chasidim (acts of loving kindness). The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee is their emergency relief agency partner. Donations through Metrowest can be made at www.ujcnj.org or by sending a check to United Jewish Communities of MetroWest NJ, 901 Route 10, P.O. Box 929,  Whippany, NJ 07981.

The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (www.jdc.org) and B'nai B'rith International (https://secure.ga1.org/05/web_relief_donations) are also available.

Please give what you can to assist with this incredibly vast human disaster.

yohannes bayu speaks at ner tamid

Currently in the United States, we are fortunate to have Yohannes Bayu, Director of the African Refugee Development Center (ARDC) in Israel, speaking at Ner Tamid on Thursday, February 11 at 7:30 p.m. Yohannes Bayu founded the ARDC in 2004 after his long ordeal to gain political asylum in Israel. He was forced to leave Ethopia in 1997 because of political persecution and government harassment. Mr Bayu was only granted political asylum in Israel, some five years after his arrival following a 23-day hunger strike on the steps of the Refugee Commissioner’s office and an order of Israel’s Supreme Court.

The African Refugee Development Center (ARDC) is a non-profit organization founded in 2004 by refugees and Israeli citizens to assist, support and empower refugees and asylum seekers in Israel. The ARDC seeks to ensure access to basic social services, and to facilitate refugee and asylum seeker integration, self-sufficiency and ownership in matters affecting their lives. In addition, the ARDC advocates for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers and for a humane and fair Israeli asylum policy.

This is an opportunity to hear an inspirational leader and visionary, as well as learn about the initiatives of the ARDC.

tnt film series: live and become

The magnificent, epic story of an Ethiopian boy who is airlifted from a Sudanese refugee camp to Israel in 1984 during Operation Moses.
